In order to resolve the friction between rotating and stationary parts of steam turbine unit, the boundary condition and temperature field of them should be known. Based on the acquaintance of the reason and background of turbine's differential expansion, the thermal characteristics and axial displacement of the steam turbine rotor have been discussed. This paper presents a new method to calculate temperature distribution of axisymetical body when both an initial temperature distribution is available and an environmental temperature is constantly changing, which is based on traditional transient heat conduction. A mathematical model for this new method has been established and is used to calculate the temperature field of the rotor. The model was verified by the use of the ANSYS software and a good coincidence of results between the model and ANSYS can be observed. It provides a new way to calculate the rotor temperature field and to estimate thermal expansion in the future.
