The status of windows in architecture design can never be ignored. Besides providing basic functions of a building, windows also reflect spiritual life of human beings. From the practical aspect, windows are used as channels for air and light to come in. As the modern techniques are getting enriched, various new building structure systems are widely applied, and people are equipped with much more interface formatting alternatives. As boundaries between walls, doors and windows are no more fixed, variable hole-format in architecture becomes possible.Based on modern aesthetics in architecture and history of architecture, this thesis focus on the discussion of windows from the following aspects: the basic formation of windows, the development of windows in modern architecture and the relationship between windows and human spiritual world. The aim of this thesis is to clarify the relationships between windows and architecture, between windows and human being and between windows and the environment through discussing the concepts, the formats and the functions of windows. It also discusses the significance of windows in modern architecture and how the difference between eastern and western cultures is reflected. In the end, this thesis can work as guidance to our design practice and a key for creating valuable final designs.
