The strength and deformation of collapsible loess have been paid great attention by scholars and engineers in the world for a long time.. Since loess is a typical unsaturated soil, some of scholars have studyed some questiones of loess by the theorey and ways of modern unsaturated soil mechanics. The effect of matric suction on the strength and deformation as well as water content of intact loess are studied in this paper.Using the direct shear testing equipment and consolidation testing equipment and modified triaxial testing equipment in the University of Logistical Engineering in Chunqing. 4 groups ( 16 specimens) consolidated drained direct shear tests and 2 groups ( 6 specimens) consolidated tests as well as 1 group ( 3 specimens) triaxial shear tests with controling matric suction were conducted. The shear strength curve and compressed curve and soil-water characteristic curve as well as triaxial stress-strain curve of intact loess were obtained. The variation rule of strength parameters associated with the matric suction were studied. The result show that the generalize soil-water characteristic curve proposed by Huanghai and Chenzhenghan is reasonable. Based on the parameters from the tests, the stability of a loess slope was analyzied by using the REAME(Rotation Equilibrium Analysis of Multiayered Embankments) program. The numerical analysis demonstrate that an safety factor of a loess slope increases with the matric suction. Therefore, matric suction has an impertinent effect on the stability of a loess slope.
