Driving simulator is an important tool, which used in development of automobile, traffic characteristic study on "man-vehicle-environment"and driving training. In recent years, study and develop driving simulator become a more and more important direction because it has many remarkable characteristics such as high security, good recurrence, strong exploration and low cost.It has been several yeas since Kunming University of Science and Technology Communication simulator lab began to study the application of virtual reality on driving simulator, and developed an road traffic simulator based on virtual reality.For the requirement to generate virtual scenes, our lab finished the development of the virtual scenes's automotically generate system in 2001. This system still has many disadvantages in the application,it is not really accomplish real-time interactiving. In addition, how to storage scene data conveniently is an problem need solved.Aimed at these problems, I began to study, then I designed and developed the road traffic virtual modeling lib. The development of virtual modeling lib has not only made up the deficiency that the OpenGL do not supply the advanced function of complicated 3D model but also improved the efficiency of program develop. On this basis, I developed an virtual scenes design system software for the road traffic simulator-VSDesign(Virtual Scene Design).VSDesign software includes two major modules: \Trtual scenes demonstration module and virtual scenes design module. Demonstration module has following functions, collision detection between three-dimensions models, steer automatically, lead maps, road inquiry network information. Design module realized real-time interactive to virtual scenes and can add, erase, modify and divide models. In addition, I studyed on the design of ground map and dynamic visual scene. Dynamic visual scene design realized the setting of Dangerous scene and it established the foundation of study driver's behavior by road traffic simulator.Development of road traffic virtual modeling lib and reality of VSDesign software solved virtual scenes's generation and data memory of road traffic simulator. But the study of virtual scenes generation is on the scratch line only, so there still has many problems need to resolve such as how to design terrain realistic image and how to simulate natural phenomena.
