Characteristic analyses of rock slopes are bases of their harness. At present, the theory concerning the characteristic analyses of rock slopes is not complete. To improve the level of engineering harness, the author redefines the evaluation of rock slope crushing level (rock mass quality), and divides the evaluation into two parts. One is the designation of surficial rock mass quality evaluation, which provides references for surficial harness of rock slopes. The other is the designation of integral stability rock mass quality evaluation, which provides references for the integral stability reinforcement. The former is simply called surficial rock quality designation(SRQD), the latter is called integral rock quality designation(IRQD). The establishment of SRQD system inaugurates one path to surficial rock mass quality evaluation, and the establishment of IRQD system is of significant value in reducing prophase engineering cost and in ensuring engineering safety.etc. Of all the integral stability evaluation methods, the finite element method (FEM) is adapted to homogenous, isotropic linear elastic mass which has small deformation. In application, FEM neglects various structure faces which control integral stability of rock slopes. The Sarma method and the Push method employ supposed sliding faces and sliding blocks, though they consider structure faces. So far, the theory of rock slope stability analyses has not been connected closely with engineering sites. For this reason, the theory does not objectively reflect rock slope stability. To solve the problem, this paper poses the theory which is applied to the study of the union of sliding faces searching and integral stability analyses. The theory is also employed to analyze the ultimate balance of a rock slope rigid body. This thought is realized by using Fortran90 and Visual C++. In this research, objective structure face data are applied to analyze integral stability of rock slopes, and the process, in which the structure network is obtained, is executed automatically by a computer. Therefore, the result of integral stability analyses and evaluation can be effectively used in the engineering design and engineering execution. Finally, the author adopts the new theory to analyze the characteristics of the TONG-HUANG highway and propose harness countermeasures of the highway. The result obtained is coincident with engineering sites. We come to the conclusion that the thoughts and methods in the paper are of high value in the harness of rock slopes.
