In combination of national key engineering project - Baozhusi Hydropower Station , an overall and systematic study is firstly made of the combined functions of high reinforced concrete gravity dam with power house behind the dam, and a new design thinking way is suggested to use the power house structure to bear the part of transferring force of the dam body so as to optimize the dam cross section and to reduce engineering quantities of dam body works in designing high reinforced concrete gravity dam in this paper. The flat finite element method and 3-D finite element method are adopted to study the following priority problems with an aim at the combination of power house with the concrete gravity dam: (1) the combination of power house with high reinforced concrete gravity dam to bear the upstream load, and the mechanism of force transferring between the dam and power house; (2) the structure patterns of combining high reinforced concrete gravity dam with power house behind the dam, the scope of combination (the elevation of joint seams), and combining opportunities (parallel seams); and (3) the effect of combining the dam with power house upon the structure of power house including the variation in stress and displacement of structure of power house. The analysis of three years' operation data from the observation and determination indicates that the research results in the combination of power house with the dam are feasible and rational.The major research results are summarized as follows:(1) On the joint seam face of combining power house with the dam, the transferring force appears to be in parabola distribution in height direction. The transferring force on the seam crest and bottom is small, but that in the seam middle is the biggest, and that in the same heights is basically even. The force transferred by Baozhushi engineering dam to power houseaccounts for 18% of total level force bom by the dam.(2) Under the action of combining power house with the dam, the stress state distribution law of dam foundation and power house foundation is normal so that there is no special treatment requirement in dam foundation and power house foundation.(3) Under the action of combining power house with the dam, power house bears the transferring force function so that there is no change in stress state in power house, whereas there is a better return.(4) It is suitable for joint seams of power house and dam to be selected below the worm shell layer of power house in order that the transferring force by the dam can be transferred to the part of large volume of reinforced concrete so as to simplify the structure design of the upper part of power house.(5) The condense connection type should be adopted in the joint seam between power house and the dam. The triangulation key grooves should be set on the joint seam face; and the joint seam grouting system should also be buried. The resistance shearing steel bars crossing the seams must be laid out in the grooves so as to make the seam face transfer either normal force or shearing force whereby guaranteeing that power house and the dam can play the combination role.(6) The analysis of observed and determined data indicates that the dam and power house structures are in normal operation; the combination of power house with the dam has achieved its due objectives, indicating that the adoption of combined design of power house with the dam to reduce dam cross section in the engineering like Baozhuishi engineering is feasible.The research achievements in this paper are only restricted in the better geological conditions of power house foundation in Baozhushi, while in the poor geological conditions for power house, the feasibility and existing problems are worth further researching by adopting the combination of power house with the dam, with caution given in using the combination of power house with the dam.
