The sump is an important part of the pumping station. The poor flow patterns are inclined to exist in the round sump which is not designed properly and then the inlet condition of the pump is not good, which makes the efficiency of the pump unit drop and causes vibration. If there are a lot of sediments in the water flow, the problem of sediment deposition is to be solved. Based on the hydraulic model test of Zhaojiabang pumping station in Shanghai, a much more thorough study was made on the hydraulic and sediment deposition characteristics in this paper.According to the layout plan of the pumping station, the flow patterns in the round sump under different operating conditions were studied. Also, the influence of the flow patterns on pump performance was discussed. The causes of poor inlet conditions such as backflows and vortices were analyzed, and some measures were made to ameliorate flow patterns and improve pump performance. The conclusions from the paper were valuable in the design of those similar pumping stations. In order to solve the sedimentation in the round sump, the turbid water experiment was made. The deposition of bed load sediment was greatly reduced in the sump by adding a flushing gallery.
