Enhanced Coagulation (EC) is a kind of treatment which can achieve good effect of organic matter removal. As an ultimately safeguard of human health, the process of EC greatly improves the quality of drinking water through removal of organics, including humic substances and disinfection byproduct formation potentials, such as trihalomethane formation potential and haloacetic acid formation potential, as well as removal of common parameters such as turbidity. Varying coagulant type, coagulant dosage, and pH has done a large amount of jar-tests of EC. In the experiments, by comparing the effects of turbidity and organics removal of five coagulant types that are alum, polyaluminum chloride (PAC), polyferric sulfate (PFS), ferric chloride, and polyaluminum sulfate-chloride (PACS), optimal dosage and range of pH have been established respectively. And PAC and ferric chloride of such aluminum salts and iron salts are recommended to use concerning two different pH ranges of raw water. And meanings, and measurement methods of two parameters indicating the concentrations of organic matters and disinfection byproduct potential formations, which are ultraviolet at the wavelength of 254nm (UV254) and total organic carbon (TOC), has been discussed. Correlation between two parameters has been also established by statistic regression, and UV254 is a good surrogate parameter of TOC in certain conditions, hi addition, a series of analyses about theoretical principles of removal of organics, especially humic substances, has been analyzed. And factors, such as coagulant type, dosage, pH, raw water characteristics, temperature, ion density, and mixing, which can influence the effect of organics removal through EC has been also discussed.
