In recent years, hamonic suppression and reactive power compensation are the requirement of green-electrical power system and green-power electrnics. So an ever increasing attention has been focused on the Active Power Filter (APF) to solve the hamonic and reactive power problems. In this regard, the widely used shunt-APF has been studied intensively in this paper. Harmonic current detecting method Ip-Iq based on the instantaneous reactive power theory was discussed in detail. By modeling and analysis of shunt-APF, it is indicated that the shunt-APF is a MIMO and decoupling system. It is recognized that the sliding mode control results in a robustness property and also a fastness in tracking control. So that the sliding mode controller is applied to the current control of the shunt-APF in this paper. Also, the calculation of the main circuit parameters of the shunt-APF has been developed. Through the simulation tool Matlab, many simulation results were dismantled, and they indicated that shunt-APF using the sliding mode control strategy has better dynamic and static performance than that using a conventional PWM controller. At last, some research work in future days and the prospect of APF have been probed into.
