| By now, there is no instance of the train ferry berth in China with neither related industry criterion nor computational theory addressed. The site selection and design of train ferry berth will be developed as a fire-new field. In general, the port is treated as the heartland in the site selection of conventional berth, whereas it is particular for train ferry berth as the relay station between sea route and railway system. To ensure the safety of the train ferry, the requirement for shipping stability is much higher than common. However, the conventional method to keep the stability can be achieved only by improving the tranquility condition of harbor with the high cost. The range of berth layout plan is limited by the conventional method, and full factors are not involved in optimum to eliminate the integrated predominance of the recommended scheme. Meanwhile, the high tranquility standard will reduce the annual operational days and throughput.As an important role, the author took part in the research work of "Yantai-Dalian Train Ferry Project" . The recommended site was authorized by the advisory committee of China Planning Commission, and the feasibility report of the project was singled out in the competition among four design institutes of first class attached to Ministry of Communications.Based on the above-mentioned work, the paper presents in detail the choice of alternative and demonstration in the stage of site selection. The paper also specifies new method for shipping stability with lower tranquility standard by perfecting and optimizing the mooring facilities, which has been confirmed through the physical experiments. The paper will provide the designer and engineer with constructive reference and practical consult in the kindred project. |
