One of the key technologies in high speed maglev trains is the design and control of linear synchronous motor (LSM). This paper investigates the basic theories and some characteristics of LSM.The mathematical model of LSM is analyzed in the d-q coordinates system. Based on this model, the dynamic emulational program of LSM is developed and the start process of the motor is simulated.The characteristic of propulsion and levitation force of the linear synchronous motor is of great importance for the drive of the maglev train. The model of (LSM) for electromagnetic field analysis is established under reasonable assumptions. Based on this model, we derived the expression of electromagnetic field of LSM, using the basic electromagnetic field theory ?Maxwell equations and Laplace equations. The analytical expression of propulsion force and levitated force of LSM is also obtained. We designed and realized the experiment of testing the characteristic of propulsion and levitation force of LSM. The characteristic curve of propulsion and levitation force-power angle is measured and the effect of excitation on propulsion force and levitated force of motor is analyzed. The analytical result is compared to that ofexperiments. The good agreement showed the validity of the analytical methods. A new scheme of the complex excitated LSM is also proposed, whichincorporates the advantage of electrical excitated LSM and permanent magnet LSM. This technique has potential application in the field of maglev.
