Five specimens of beam-column connections were tested under reversed cyclic loading. Experimental results showed that eccentric joints connecting spread-ended beams, which have enlarged beam width with inclined reinforcement, can result in superior seismic performance. The comparison of crack pattern, the energy dissipation and the stress distribution in stirrups among those eccentric joints connecting spread-ended beams with modified enlarged beam width are provided. Also presented in this paper is the strain distribution of inclined reinforcement and straight reinforcement in the enlarged portion of the beams. To account adequately for the effect of eccentricty and enlarged beam width, a new equation for the effective joint width to estimate the nominal joint shear strength is proposed.
