Traffic characteristics of urban expressways are of great importance in urban transportation system. This thesis aims at modeling traffic characteristics of urban expressways. Firstly, this thesis analyzes traffic characteristics of urban expressways and finds vehicles are generally in the state of car following. Secondly, this thesis reviews the development and tendency of car following models, and finds behavioral threshold model is most consistent with car following characteristics. Thirdly, this thesis builds up a behavioral threshold model for urban expressways, on the base of the reality of China. Finally, the model is calibrated, utilizing the field data, which have been collected on the 3rd ring road in Beijing. Utilizing the computer simulation and the statistical analysis. the model is validated. The practice testifies the model reflects car following characteristics on urban expressways.
