Sediment transport plays an important role in estuary and coastal engineering. The evolution and rational exploiation of estuary and coast closely relate to sustainable development and harmony of human and nature. Therefore, it is very important to study the problems of sediment in estuary and coastal. The main work of this paper is optimizing and improving the algorithm of three-dimensional finite element model which have been presented to simulate the suspended sediment transport. The numerical solution of original model was revised to be a variable mesh finite element. The paper's work which is used to optimize the algorithm is as following:First, removing the double counting part of the original model. Second, Gaussian main element elimination which is used to compute Global Stiffness Matrix is replaced with lumped mass method. Third, the serial computation method which is used to compute Element Stiffness Matrix is replaced with parallel computation method. The model of suspended sediment which is writed by FORTRAN computer language, have used a lot of large scale two dimensional matrixes. Therefore, it affects the practicality of the model. This paper avoids using these large scale two-dimensional matrixs by studying the algorithm. Through a series of optimization and improvement mentioned above, the numerical results of this model is same accuracy as before and is about 75 times faster than before. Moreover, when the work of optimizing the model is finished, this model is adopted to simulate the suspended sediment transport at the North Passage of The Changjiang estuary. The hydrodynamic software package,3-D MOHID model is adopt to simulate the tide field. Through the experience summed up by our predecessors, we get the diffusion coefficients, settling velocity, accretion-erosion function of the suspended sediment. Based on a comparative analysis of the calculated results and the data available from observation, we can find that the calculated results agree with the observed data.
