Shell structures, especially simply shaped revolving shells, and structures combined by such shells, are widely used in various engineering applications. In engineering field, such a structure often undertake shock, vibration, wind loads, seismic loads, wave loads, aerodynamic and other dynamic loads, so the dynamical characteristics of these structures must be taken into consideration during the design process of engineering structures. In this dissertation, free vibration of simply shaped revolving shells, such as cylindrical shells, conical shells and annular plates, and revolving shells combined with annular plates, cylindrical and conical shells under different boundaries is studied.First, for cylindrical shells, conical shells and annular plates, combined with respective boundary conditions, a coupled set of first order differential equations which describe their vibration characteristics are derived. Then the transfer matrix method is employed to analyze the free vibration of simply shaped revolving thin-walled shells, and a finite element simulation is performed using ABAQUS software. It is shown that the results obtained by transfer matrix method are in good agreement with FEM results, which validates the transfer matrix method to solve the issue of free vibration of simply shaped revolving thin-walled shells. Furthermore, by introducing the matching conditions of annular-cylindrical shell and cylindrical-conical shell, the free vibration is investigated for revolving shells combined with annular plates, cylindrical and conical shells under different boundaries. Finally, the dynamic model of a specific engineering structure is established using the proposed method, and the numerical results are briefly analyzed. The transfer matrix method proposed in this dissertation provides an effective way to study the free vibration of revolving thin-walled shells, facilitates the optimal design of thin-walled shell structure.
