For existing pavement structure, the external edges of surface, base and subbase are all designed as slope of 1:1. When the structure layer have enough thickness, the slope can't strengthen stability, which cause waste of materials. If the edges of pavement structure layers are not designed as slope, they whether meet the need of structure stability. How to strengthen the shoulder's lateral supporting effect to pavement structure, in order to avoid the supporting effect weakened gradually influenced by frost and rain. The paper has the following research contents.Firstly, analyzing the application and research actuality of pavement finite element at home and abroad, ABAQUS is universal software which deals with geotechnical engineer problems. It includes abundant material models, can simulate pavement construction materials by rule and line, has marked advantage in dealing with non-linear problems of geotechnical mechanics, consequently, the paper chooses ABAQUS as analytical means.Secondly, the paper establishes 3d finite element model for edge stress analysis and 2d finite element model for slope stability analysis using ABAQUS software, and sets the parameters of models.the paper analyses the relationship between stress of structure layers and standard axle loading position, determines the critical loading position and influence range of load.the paper analyses the relationship between stress of structure layers and the size of heavy load to find the index which is sensitive to load size .the paper analyses the influence of subgrade lateral restriction, when shortening the lateral width of base , subbase and soil shoulder.the paper analyses the stress of existing pavement structure to decide the regularity and difference of stress variation with standard axle load and heavy load for two pavement structures.Finally, based on analysis result of previous paper, the paper analyses engineering example using key factors, and gives the economic evaluation of asphalt pavement whose layers have vertical pattern edge.
