Magnetic bearing rotor system have small adjustable range of stiffness and damping, the vibration suppression ability is poor, magneto-rheological(MR) damper can provide controlled damping, use MR damper to support magnetic bearing rotor system can improve the vibration suppression of magnetic bearing rotor system. This paper mainly studied the radial MR damper supporting magnetic bearing rotor system.Firstly, this paper studied the effectiveness and feasibility of MR damper using in magnetic bearing rotor system. Proceeding from the vibration model of rotor, obtained MR damper can inhibit the vibration of magnetic bearing rotor; by the working principle of MR damper, derived the damping formula. Base on the analysis of experimental magnetic bearing rotor, derived the stiffness and damping should provide by MR damper; work for the magnetic field may exist coupling between MR damper and magnetic bearing, analyzed the two magnetic fields and draw two no-coupling conditions. This paper designed the shear-mode MR damper and squeeze-mode MR damper, for the different rotor vibration frequency, calculated the coil current to be imposed. Researched the cantilever which provide stiffness, designed the cantilever support system. This paper also used 3D simulation to validate the correctness of using 2D instead of 3D simulation. And had a research and analysis on shear-mode MR damper using sub-magnetic circuit method.By this analysis, compared the advantages and disadvantages of shear-mode MR damper and squeeze-mode MR damper, work for the experimental conditions, propose use squeeze-mode MR damper to support magnetic bearing rotor system can have a good vibration suppression.
