As a novel style of machine, hybrid excitation synchronous machine (HESM) has both permanent magnet and field winding. It can effectively solve the difficulty of air-gap magnetic field adjustment of permanent magnet machine and relatively low efficiency of electric excitation machine, so it's valuable to research and apply. Meanwhile, the brushless synchronous machine, which has futures as high reliability and simple maintenance are widely used in the field of aviation. So it has an important significance to explore a novel brushless AC machine which has high power density, good controllability and reliable operation.A novel tangential/radial hybrid excitation synchronous machine (T/R-HESM) was researched in this paper, its configuration characteristics and operation principle were introduced. According to the special tangential/radial magnetic path, equivalent magnetic circuit model was built and principle of air-gap magnetic field adjustment was discussed. Using finite element method (FEM), the 2D model of TR-HESM was set up in JAMG-Studio. The magnetic field distribution and static/dynamic characteristics were obtained. They indicate that T/R-HESM can conveniently make air-gap magnetic field be adjusted and controlled fully, and the shunt-wound magnetic path can form a significant magnet congregate effect. To improve operation reliability and widen application field of T/R-HESM, the rotation rectifier is adopted to make it brushless. In view of the special structure of T/R-HESM, a scheme of two-stage self-excitation was proposed. The excitation machine was designed and FEM models with and without rotation rectifier were built. The characteristics got by FEM show that brushless excitation system can completely satisfy the excitation requirement of T/R-HESM. In order to further the study of the two-stage motor system, a model was built in MATLAB. The results of simulation are consistent with that got from FEM.Finally, a 380V/1.5KW prototype was designed and produced to take an experimental study. The characteristics tests of TR-HESM, excitation machine and synchronous machine with rotation rectifier were carried out respectively. The experimental results verify the reasonability of electromagnetic design and correctness of simulation on both TR-HESM and excitation machine, and they also prove the feasibility and application value of the motor.
