Marine engine room simulator is a synthetical system imitating realistically and displaying the functions of ship engine room with the aid of computers. All the control panels, instruments, operations, layouts and even sounds and lights are exactly identical with those on board real ships. The only difference between the simulator and real ship is that all the ship status signals are simulated by computers. Practice of maritime education has proven that, simulator, an advanced maritime education tool, is suitable for cultivating modern marine management talents effectively and swiftly. Meanwhile, it benchmarks the technological level of a nation.Many kinds of high and new technologies such as computers, multimedia, information processing, software engineering, graphics and videos, automatic control, etc. have synthetically been used in marine engine room simulator, which, however, itself is restricted by its hardware, running environment and the training requirements. For this reason, there are some shortcomings lie in the application of marine engine room simulator such as poor authenticity, poor scalability, low operation stability, high failure frequency, poor maintainability and hard secondary development. Furthermore, the monitoring function of parameters and running conditions, as well as assessment system for trainees are not yet sophisticated enough. Thus the effect of teaching and training by simulator is tampered accordingly. As to the existent problems mentioned previously, this thesis analyzes the main problems lying in current marine engine room simulator and puts forward in detail the development and building of virtual simulator, so as to integrate hardware with virtual technology, optimize and extend function of marine engine room simulator, as well as improve its training efficiency.The main contents of this thesis are as follows.(1) First, structure and function of conventional simulators are analyzed in detail and current problems in marine simulators put forward.(2) Research of virtual marine engine room simulator is carried out for the purpose of eliminating the previously mentioned shortcomings in conventional simulators which are mainlv based on hardware. 3) Based on virtual technology, main devices in engine room are developed. Relevant virtual software technologies are analyzed, compared and optimized.What deserves special mention is that the research in this thesis has not been fully developed yet. But with the purpose of improving and innovating the application of simulator technology, the research in this thesis may help to utilize teaching resources more reasonably. strengthen trainees" live feeling, enhance simulator operation stability and improve training effectiveness.
