The primary lithium/iodine battery has been widely used as an important power source for the cardiac pacemaker applications. This Li/I2 battery is unable to be discharged at high rate or be charged. Here we present a simply fabricated new Li/I2 battery made by coating lithium plate with a thin layer of solid electrolyte---LiI(HPN)2 and then exposing to I2 vapor. Different from classic primary Li/I2 cells, this new class of Li/I2 battery conduct mainly based on I- anions, principally between electrolyte, cathode and the electrochemical mechanism associated. Discharging capacity of this new Li/I2 cell could achieve 33.5μAh/cm2 under the current density of 24μA/cm2.Interestingly, I2-LiI(HPN)2 formed by mixing iodine and LiI(HPN)2 can also be served as a new cathode for Li/I2 batteries and is comparable with widely used P2VP additive in classic primary Li/I2 cells. Li/LiI(HPN)2/I2-LiI(HPN)2 (1:1) cell exhibit reversibility. The fabrication process is so simple that it could be used as low cost thin film batteries in various low-power electronic devices to replace expensive solid thin film batteries. In addition, it is expected that the improvement of rate capability and reversibility in such cells have the potential for revolutionizing the primary Li/I2 cells.
