The situation of modern battleground is changing every second, pattern is becoming more and more diversified and area is also more and more wider than before, which is from the space to the seabed. The emergence of high-performance air defense weapons and the gradual improvement of defense system make the chance of missile successful penetration a more and more lower level in the middle and high altitude. It's the main way that the low-flying cruise missiles, sea-skimming anti-ship missiles and armed helicopter break the defense. Just being based on this background of military needs, in the paper, we have studied the principles and methods of low altitude detection with the microwave technology, which is to provide an effective way for the low altitude defense.First, paper discusses the current grim situation of low-altitude penetration and the research status of low-altitude target detection technology, and then introduces the basic theory knowledge of microwave detection principle.The key of paper is the principles of microwave detection system and the implementation circuits. Study of microwave detection system include the fixed target (or slow motion, suspended goal) and the fast moving target. Their principles and methods of detection are different, the former is to change the analog signal into digital signal and then demodulate the echo modulated signal, while the latter focuses on collecting Doppler signal with the analog signal processing methods. According to the theory above, we have proposed the realization methods of microwave detection system and then completed the circuit design and simulation.The final part of paper is the experiment. We have conducted the actual test for the microwave detection system, which is divided into the experiment of fixed targets distance and speed moving targets. In addition to some experimental results of each part, the performance of external subsystems and error analysis are also given. The results show that the principles and methods we have propose of microwave detection system is feasible to achieve an effective detection to the fixed objectives and the moving targets.
