Paper honeycomb is widely used in distribution chains as energy absorber or cushions to protect products from accidental impacts. Cell walls of paper honeycomb core loaded axially are folded progressively; the resultant load-deflection curve exhibits a long plateau with small fluctuations. In this paper, combined with experimental research and finite element simulation, the deformation mechanisms and crushing property of paper honeycomb were studied systematically. The energy absorption property of paper honeycomb is aslo discussed.Experiment study was conducted in this paper. First, mechanical property of raw paper is tested. Then, three types of common used paper honeycomb core were compressed quasi-statically in the general material machine, and impact tests of three specimens were conducted in the drop-weight system under four relative humidity(50%,70%,80%,90%). All these experiment resulats provided a solided foundation for further analysis. The effects of thickness-to-length ratio and relative humidity on the crushing property of paper honeycomb is concluded as following:the initial peak stress and the plateau stress were decreased with the decreasing thickness-to-length ratio and the increasing ambient humidity in this study. In this paper, non-linear finite element software ANSYS/LS-DYNA is used to analyze the crushing property of paper honeycomb. Geometrical model of peper honeycomb was created in ANSYS, and the parameters of material were obtianed by testing the physical properties of raw paper. The numerical solution were carried out using the explicit finite element code LS-DYNA. LS-PROPOST was used as visualisition tool post-processer.Energy absorption curve of paper honeycomb was constructed in various ambient humidity. These results indicate that the energy absorption capability of paper honeycomb was decreased with the decreasing thickness-to-length ratio and the increasing of the relative humidity.
