With the acceleration of urbanization in China, the quantities of motor vehicles rapidly increase, so the contradiction between traffic demand and supply is more and more severe. Traffic congestion and jam have become urgent problems which need to be solved. And the reasonable configuration of time-space recourses for intersections is one of the effective methods to solve these problems.The paper puts forward synergistic optimization for short lane channelization and signal timing design at intersections, and mainly includes three aspects. On the one hand, according to analyzing the impact of short lane on saturation flow rate of approach, the optimization models for a single intersection and two adjacent intersections are developed. The objective of the model is to maximize the intersection capacity and minimize the average delay of vehicles, and its decision variables are the length of short lane and the effective green time. Then, the general procedure is compiled to solve the optimization model by applying MATLAB software. On the other hand, using the traffic survey data from the typical intersection in Dalian city, the optimal scheme is gotten, and then compared and analyzed based on the indices of capacity, average delay of vehicles and degree of saturation, together with the current scheme. Also, the current and optimized schemes are simulated and compared by using VISSIM software in order to verify the reliability and effectiveness of the optimization model. Additionally, about the transformation of the objective functions in those optimization models from a multi-objective to a single objective, the influences of the different objective functions on the optimization results are discussed, and the traffic conditions under the different schemes are compared by using VISSIM software.The research results show that the synergistic optimization for short lane channelization and signal timing can improve traffic flow operations and level of service of intersection, and can optimally configure time and space resources of intersection or intersection group. The achievements in this thesis can be applied to the engineering practice of traffic design and signal control, and can provide an effective method for solving traffic congestion.
