As a consequence of the controllability needs of interconnected electric power system, Flexible AC Transmission System(FACTS) has been paid more and more attentions by researchers. As one of the widely used FACTS devices, Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) has the advantages of effectively increasing the transfer capability, regulation the distribution of the power flow, suppressing the low-frequency oscillations. The Hunan power system has such issues as uneven distribution of power flow and low-frequency oscillation generators. The paper researches on application of TCSC in Hunan Power System. The work includes the following topics:Firstly, for the calculation of TCSC locations, a sensitivity coefficient is derived to evaluate the influences on total transfer capability caused by different locations of TCSC, and the method is applied to locate the TCSC in Hunan Power Grid. Then, from the perspective of improving the ability of power flow in transmission lines, the paper analysis the selection of TCSC installing capacity.Secondly, based on the Power System Analysis Software Package(PSASP 6.26), two kinds of power flow model containing TCSC are proposed, firing angle a and the equivalent impedance of TCSC respectively as the state variables. The paper applies the equivalent impedance of TCSC as state variables.Thirdly, the TCSC is applied in the Hunan power system, regulates the uneven distribution of the power flow in the Hunan power system.Forthly, the paper analyses and discusses the characteristics of Prony Analysis, then applies it in Hunan Power Grid, low-frequency oscillation in the grid nodes and sections is identified through it.Finally, Damping characteristic of the TCSC is analyzed and the low-frequency oscillation in Hunan Power Grid is effectively suppressed through the installation of the TCSC.
