In urban construction, buried power cables are used more and more generally. Due to environmental corrosion, insulation aging, man-made damage and defects in power cables and other factors itself, buried power cable fault has Often occurred. This paper aims to make a research on a method of diagnosing buried power cable fault:A brief analysis of the research background and the trends of the cable fault diagnosis technology is given. The basic theory of cable fault diagnosis technology is also introduced, such as the basic structure of the cable, the causes of the fault, classification of the fault and the common methods of the fault diagnosis. Detection methods of weak signal in complex environment are also discussed, for example, correlation detection technology, digital filter and adaptive control methods and so on.Based on synchronization correlation detection theory, the cable fault diagnosis system is designed, which uses micro-controller STC89C52R. The system includes hardware module circuits of signal source, display and keys , lock-in amplifier and so on. C language is used to complete the corresponding controlling code. Ultimately the cable fault diagnosis system is realized. At last, two experiments is designed to test the accuracy and stability of the system. This cable fault diagnosis system is mainly used for cable fault in low resistance and short- circuit. It is basically used synchronization correlation detection technology and also adds an adaptive control method to eliminate the noise within the system or external, so as to extract corresponding parameters and calculate the position of cable fault.
