With the rapid development of the public road and railroad in China, diverse bridge structure appears. The corresponding design method becomes more reasonable. In addition, the high-tensile steel is adopted. As a result, the steel bridge has gradually become the important component of the bridge construction in China.The steel plate beam bridge which is economical with the small span structure is widely employed in building public roads and railroads in China, especially the commonly used simple support steel plate beam bridge. The design and calculation methods for the conventional small span steel plate beam bridge, especially for the simple support steel plate beam bridge, have been fully developed. However, as for some non-conventional conditions such as the small span steel plate beam bridge with relative large and intensive load, more attention should be paid to the stipulated sectional parameters of some related standards.In this study, the detailed stress analysis is carried out for the shi men kan steel plate girder in Pu'er of Yunan Province by using the finite element program of the software ANSYS. The characteristic of this bridge is that it undertakes a large and centralized load. Firstly, the essential parameters are selected based on various standards. The chosen parameters cover the steel plate beam bridge's transverse stiffener's spacing, the longitudinal stiffener and vertical and horizontal stiffener thickness. Besides, the finite element computation is conducted for the condition with the least favorable load. Based on the result discussion, the reasonable parameters are proposed for the considered bridge.Secondly, the steady state analysis is conducted for the steel plate beam bridge with different parameters. The reasonable parameters are proposed on the basis of calculating the structure's flexure load.Finally, the optimum parameters and structure's characteristic and request of the studied bridge with heavy load are determined considering the rigidity,the intensity and the stability. Compared with the stress characteristic of the steel plate beam bridge in ordinary loading conditions, valuable suggestions are obtained for the design of the steel plate beam bridge with heavy load.
