With the development of automobile industry, air pollution due to auto engines burning fossil fuel turns severer and severer; this already threatens the health of human beings and the balance of worldwide ecology. Meanwhile, the durative of fuel providing to so many autos is being challenged. So the international automobile industry has long before begun to optimize and improve engine technologies, among which the development and improvement of engine ECU is one of the main subjects. Hardware in the loop (HIL) test, which consists of both hardware devices and virtual engine models, is an essential part of the V development course of engine ECU. This article is intended to study the engine model during its cold start process.After an overall study of related researches already existed, a method of how this research can proceed is brought forward. After the analysis of the principle and procedure of engine cold start, a model of start motor driving the engine set is established, by means of theory analysis and experiment. Air is teken into cylinders through idle speed valve, which boasts unique characteristics. Based on mean value theory, and by means of experiment and software simulation, a model describing the air intake process is then founded.When the engine speed reaches a limen, fuel injection and spark ignition take place. A model of these events is then created, with its parameters distinguished. After a model of torque exerted on the engine moving set, the whole engine cold start model relatively complete.After its construction in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, the model is then applied on an HIL test system, to simulate the start process of the target engine and its results are then validated with the help of TESIS enDYNA engine model.
