With the need of power supply, the development of power system is turning for the higher voltage and larger capacity direction. As the increase of voltage grade of transmission line, the proportion of outages, because of lightning also increase. The cause of lightning accident is due to characteristics of lightning data in the last analysis. Lightning data are mostly obtained by manpower on the base of weather observation station in the past, which is with low precision and efficiency. At present, the method of lightning location system has substituted for the traditional method of collecting lightning data. With the new method, more lightning parameters can be detected, such as the lightning striking location, intensity, strike back time and intensity effectively.In the paper, validity of lightning data collected by LLS and locating error has been studied on. The analysis model of lightning data based on Arcgis has been established,which named lightning data analysis model of transmission line porch. In the model, two statistic methods have been used to study the characteristic of lightning data. They are single band partition method and region partition method of the faulty to single tower. The result of analysis can provide basic data for insulation and lightning proof design. It is also convenient for determine the easy lightning strike portion.In order to evaluate lightning strike risk effectively, models have been built for calculation. Compile lightning protection emulation index software by using Visual Basic 6.0 as program development tool, users can input the data of towers and get the lightning-protection emulation assess. In the model, factor used to emulate the risk of lightning striking are as follows, the calculation result of lightning protection performance, the occurrence rate of discharge lightning current threshold and relative lightning flash ability in the regions of tower nearby.It is noted that the lightning protection level of transmission line is not only correlated with the design of lightning-proof, but also with lightning activity data based on LLS. It is needed to pay attention to lightning activity data analysis and access the different faulty risk of back striking and shielding failure of overhead line. Finally, make a reasonable decision for lightning proof.
