Sec-butyl Acetate (SBAC),one of four isomers of butyl acetate, is a colorless,combustible and transparent liquid with fruit flavor at room temperature and with a taste a bit heavier than butyl acetate. It is a strong -solvent at middle evaporation rate, with weak toxicity, and almost compatible with all of the resin and organic. Sec-butyl acetate is an important organic chemical-material, and it is used mainly as solvent in manufacturing coatings applications , also being used in spicy and parma industries.In this paper, many methods are applied ,such as distillation,azeotropic distillation and so on. Butyl acetate is the proceeds from the addition of butane mixture, which is separated and refined through combined multi-tower, and the mixture of acetic acid is recycled,inspected in effect of many factors on the purity of SBAC,such as temperature,feed rate,amount of recovery tower,reflux ratio,azeotropic dosage,feed location and so on. The products obtained are analyzed by gas chromatography, and access to appropriate distillation conditions.Because the purity of refined products is different, two distillation flowsheets are provided,those are four-column single azeotropic distillation and four-column double azeotropic distillation . The former is suitable for product purity must meet to 98.5% and the yield up to 85%; the latter is suitable for product purity must meet to 99.5% and the yield up to 90%. The former has low cost for the number of towers is one less than the latter,while the latter owns high yield producing more purity SBAC. Therefore, the application should be based on the actual situation in the program selection.Aspen Plus software is also used , through the methods of simulation, to make optimization of the above operation, providing guidance on distillation process and the design of appropriate equipment, and lay a foundation for further development of this process.
