The Reasearch On Outdoor Furniture Design In City

Outdoor furniture in urban are commonly used elements in small scale. They're basically components of the streets and squares, moreover the important parts in urban environment and landscape as well as symbols for animation in streets. The outdoor furniture does not only have the characteristics as indoor furniture, but also own their specialty in commonality and communication.Beginning from the background in which outdoor furniture produced, the author regards outdoor furniture as a kind of city public environmental facility and analyzed its category and basic feature. In this paper the outdoor furniture is classified into public environmental and private garden outdoor furniture based on the knowledge of furniture concept and analysis of landscape environmental facility. Outdoor furniture in city is an important component of public environment and principal part of city landscape as well as a node. Therefore, it plays an important role in public space in city.Being a branch of furniture design, outdoor furniture design is affected by many factors. Based on the comparing the city outdoor furniture design at home and abroad, the thesis analyzed the factors related to outdoor furniture design systematically and brought forward that 1) the design should under the rule of scientific concept such as function, humanization, artistry, harmony and sustainability; 2) from the methodology of systematic theories, every component should be integrated in arrangement and order after the sufficient investigation; 3) the outdoor furniture should be utility, beautiful, economic and harmony with the environment as well as adapting the high speed of urbanization.The author divides the design of city outdoor furniture into four stages:design orientation stage, psychological and behavior investigation, conceptive stage, carrying out design. The contents are different in each stage, however, there's no definite boundary between these stages in practice as they may repeat, circulate or pervade with each other. Finally the thesis ends with the proposed assessment of design of outdoor furniture in city, in which the steps in assessment are elaborated from content, method, analyses and results. The assessment can be guarantee for the development of Chinese city outdoor furniture design and provide the necessary support for domestic furniture enterprise to innovate their design.
