As incineration is more widely chosen as one of the major treatments of municipal solid waste (MSW), large amount of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is generated from the incinerators. MSWI fly ash is classified as hazardous material containing heavy metals and dioxins, which must be securely handled. At present, there are still some defects in MSWI fly ash treatment technologies, which have been applied in the stage of industrialization. Therefore, we are struggling to find a new technological route completely suitable for China situation.Theoretically, high temperature coal gasification technology of entrained flow bed is feasible for handling MSWI fly ash. As an essential premise for industrial application, it has important significances to study the effects of MSWI fly ash on normal operation of commercial entrained flow gasifiers.Based on high temperature coal gasification technology of entrained flow bed, this paper researched the physical and chemical properties of MSWI fly ash by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-Ray Diffractomer (XRD) and X-ray energy spectrometer (EDS). Besides, the effects of MSWI fly ash on melting characteristics as well as gasification reactivity were emphatically studied in this paper. Experimental results revealed that ash fusion temperature (AFT) of Shenfu increased with the increase of MSWI fly ash content and the suitable ratios of MSWI fly ash A, B were 0-20wt.% and 0-40wt%; MSWI fly ash in gasifier had little effect on the reactivity of Shenfu coal char, but it could promote the reactivity of Anqing petroleum coke apparently.
