Under the condition of normal temperature, normal pressure and absence of catalyst, phenol and maleic anhydride are mixed together both in solid state, and the resultant is a charge transfer complex which is a yellow color liquid under normal condition. In the paper, this phenol-maleic anhydride charge transfer complex's formation and chemical structure are confirmed by various chemistry experiments and instrumental analyses (IR, elemental analysis), and its physical properties are studied. The result shows: this complex has good selectivity and solubility performance for aromatics, and it could be used as aromatic hydrocarbon extraction solvent.Because of charge transference, electron density of carbon-carbon double bond is slightly increased. This phenomenon is beneficial to polymerization. Maleic anhydride's self-polymerization and copolymerization are studied in this paper.Hydrolyzed Poly-Maleic Anhydride(HPMA) is a water-processing scale inhibition dispersant with fine performance. In this paper, the charge transfer complex polymerizes to produce HPMA initiated by azobisisobutyronitrile(AIBN). This experiment's result show that the optimum conditions of HPMA's synthesis based on charge transfer complex are: reaction temperature 55℃,reaction duration 5h, initiator amount 7.5wt%. Compared with industrial manufacture process, this synthesis has these advantages: mild reaction condition, high yield, environmental-friendliness. HPMA has good scale inhibition performance to CaCO3. In the static scale inhibition experiments, the scale inhibition rate is 91.25% to CaCO3 and 85.11% to Ca3(PO4)2 under the condition of pH=7, and scale inhibitor amount 60 mg?L-1. The synthesized HPMA scale inhibitor is not only useful for water system at high calcium ion, but for highly basic water system. However, HPMA scale inhibitor is only useful for acid and neutral water system.Maleic anhydride and styrene copolymerizes to produce styrene-maleic anhydride(SMA). SMA is a functional polymer and is applied widely. In this paper, styrene and phenol-maleic anhydride charge transfer complex's polymerization reaction is studied. The result shows: SMAs with different molecular weights and properties can be obtained by adjusting the proportion of styrene and complex under the condition of normal temperature and absence of initiator.
