Perylene derivatives are characterized by a strong absorption in visible region of spectrum and exhibit a similarly strong fluorescence. Most perylene derivatives dyes display emission above 500 nm that benefits by the improvement of the signal/noise ratio in biological system owing to the presence of high autofluorescence of living cells. A lot of effort has been made to solve their water-solubility. With high fluorescence quantum yields (FQYs) and photostability, their potential as fluorescent dyes constitute fertile soil for research on fluorescent labelling.Chapter 1: The research and applications of perylene derivatives have been reviewed, especially for the water soluble perylene derivatives.Chapter 2: A series of water-soluble and high fluorescent perylene derivatives have been synthesized by indroducing pyridine oxide moieties to perylene core or to imide groups. The UV-vis and emission spectra of the derivatives in different ratio of THF and H2O were discussed. One novel colorimetric and fluorometric probe based on perylene bisimide derivative (8) has been developed for Zn2+ detection with high selectivity and sensitivity.Chapter 3: A series of water-soluble and high fluorescent perylene derivatives have been synthesized by indroducing N-oxide pyrrole groups. The electrostatic potential maps (MEP) were calculated from B3LYP/6-31G* density functional calculations. And the photophysical properties were also researched both in organic solvent and water.
