| Carbon black is a kind of carbonaceous materials with unique microstructure, particle configuration and surface behavior. XC-72 is a kind of carbon black. The material was characterized by SEM,XRD,FTIR,XPS and TG. Then adsorption behaviors and mechanism with methyl orange, methylene blue, phenol and 1-naphthol were investigated using batch adsorption experiments. The main results of experiments were as follows:(1) XC-72 carbon has high specific area, well chemical stability and thermal stability. XC-72 carbon contains C and a small amount of O and H elements which distribute on the surface of carbon black to form surface functional groups and control chemical properties of carbon black.(2) The acid-base titration of XC-72 was carried out, and the experiment data were optimized to obtain surface site concentration distribution with the aid of FITEQL3.2. The surface sites exist with≡SOH2+,≡SO- and≡SOH there forms and varied with varying pH.(3) XC-72 is a kind of suitable material for removal of organic pollutants from large volumes of aqueous solutions. While pH is 6.5, the adsorption capacity Qmax for the adsorption of methyl orange, methylene blue, phenol and 1-naphthol at 20 0C on XC-72 is 72.89 mg·g-1, 40.11 mg·g-1, 12.62 mg·g-1, 83.54 mg·g-1, respectively.(4) The adsorption of methyl orange, methylene blue, phenol and 1-naphthol on XC-72 depends on the pH.(5) The kinetic adsorption of methyl orange, methylene blue on XC-72 can be described well by pseudo-second-order rate equation; the Langmuir model fit the experiment data of methyl orange and methylene blue well. According to the thermodynamics data, the adsorption of methyl orange on XC-72 was exothermic and spontaneous process, but the adsorption of methylene blue was endothermic and spontaneous process.(6) The kinetic adsorption of phenol and 1-naphthol on XC-72 can be described well by pseudo-second-order rate equation; the Langmuir model fit the experiment data of 1-naphthol well, but the Freundlich model fit the experiment date of phenol well. The adsorption of phenol was exothermic and spontaneous process and the adsorption of 1-naphthol on XC-72 was endothermic and spontaneous process.(7) The adsorption of methyl orange, methylene blue, phenol and 1-naphthol on XC-72 mainly depends on physical adsorption with part of chemical adsorption. |
