At present, the identification of ivories and its products are on the basis of their morphological characteristics, which are depicted in Identification guide for ivory and ivory substitutes established by Espinoza E O and Mann M J in 1991. However, when these technologies are applied, many factors can make a difference to the accuracy of identification results, The morphological structure of small material is unclear, the existing methods are often difficult to identify them precisely, the identification error frequently occurs, so they are the difficult in the management of domestic ivory trade.The aim of this study is to establish a set of operated easily and normative technical standard of ivory and ivory products identification, in order to solve the problem of existing identification methods, and improve the accuracy of identification. We did some verifying researches on conventional methods, and norm the operation to reduce the artificial discrepancy, after verified repetitiously. The researches include:the ultraviolet fluorescence detection research on 52 ivory, and other similar material, alternatives, established appropriate technical standards; introduced Image J software into measure the outer Schrege angles of cross-section of 20 mammoth ivories and 20 modern ivories to do the Schrege structural verifying research, and established appropriate technical standard; brought in molecular biology to further solve the problem of the identification ivory and its similar material. Finally, based on lot of researches, we established Technical Standard of Ivory and Ivory Products Identification draft), and assessed all technical methods. The results show that the artificial ivory material that do not contain fluorescent substances can be detected, according to UV fluorescence detection technology from The technical standard of ivory and ivory products identification; Image J software can effectively improve the accuracy of the results; mammoth ivories, modern ivories and walrus can be effectively identified with primer-pair TTF/TTR and primer-pair HX-2F/HX-2R.Technical Standard of Ivory and Ivory Products Identification (draft) can standardize related technical operations, and improve the accuracy of the identification results, useful to solve the technical problems of identification of China, it will be a powerful technology support to manage domestic ivory market.
