In the traditional cutting process, cutting fluid is usually used to cool and lubricate tool and workpiece, which can prolong the tool life and improve the workpiece's surface quality. But cutting fluid also brings high cost, polluted environment and poor health. To solve these problems, dry cutting method appears.In order to protect environment and decrease cost, dry cutting can obtain the desired results by using little cutting fluid or none at all. The special tool, lathe, related process technology and other cooling method are also adopted in dry cutting process. In this thesis, a new cooling way that uses a corona discharge to cool workpiece in Electrostatic cooling technology is studied.Electrostatic cooling technology use negative direct-current high-field to ionize air. The ionized air is supplied to cutting area to cool workpiece and tool instead of cutting fluid. It can prolong tool's life, break the chip and so on. This new technology is to combine electrostatic technology and metal cutting technology. Compare with traditional cutting fluid, The use of electrostatic cooling technology avoids the disadvantage of cutting fluid in some way.Imbursed by Dalian Science and Technology Project Foundation (2007A10GX120), this thesis finishes work as following:This thesis analyzes many kinds of air discharging mechanism and ionization station. The corona discharge with negative direct-current is choosed as the discharging method. Needle-canister discharging is more effective and simpler which is designed in this thesis.After choosing electrode structure and discharging method, we design the electrostatic cooling equipment, which includes of power supply, air pressure system, electrode and cutting system.The experimental results show that the discharging status is optimal when the air pressure is 0.4MPa, die opening is 15mm and external voltage is 5.1KV and the ionic concentration is 1.2×1011uni/cm3. Compared with traditional dry cutting technology, electrostatic cooling technology is better in chip breaking, prolonging life, improving workpiece's quality.
