Recently years, the remote fault diagnosis system is increasingly being valued by industry. Virtual reality technology opens up a new way to remote manual fault diagnosis, in that its unique advantage over human-computer interaction and immersion makes the description of failure phenomena intuitive and is conductive to utilize the valuable experience and knowledge of human experts.This paper takes numerical control (NC) machines as the example to establish the remote fault diagnosis system based on VRML by research and analysis to virtual reality-based remote fault diagnosis system, according to the failure status features in software and hardware of NC machines. It is aimed at, in the network environment, using computer technology to simulate equipment failures and create a 3D virtual environment reflecting status and interaction for users, and direct participating and exploring the role and change of fault equipment in its environment to realize the web dialogue between technology support center and NC machines users (demanders), which makes service-side know the performance characteristics of NC machines failure on demand-side, so as to estimate NC machines failure and put forward feasible solution.The fault characteristics are the basis of fault diagnosis. The paper takes static fault characteristics and the state of NC process remote description as the major study and utilizes VRML, Java language as a development tool to build a B/S structural virtual environment application platform. The paper studies the method of human-computer interactive description to fault characteristics and realizes texture mapping anywhere on the VRML model based on pre-splitting the model planes by 3DSMAX, and realizes turning process simulation driven by NC procedure by abstracting workpiece into a series of planes and cutting the certain pieces, which enable NC process visible. The study of this system lays a good foundation for further building a virtual remote service environment.
