There are three advanced factories, GLEASON in America, OERLIKON in Switzerland and KLINGEIBERG in Germany, to product spiral bevel gear. And they will never reveal the kernel of their technology.Using reverse engineering technology to obtain geometric data of a Epicycloids'Bevel Gear prototype is what study in this paper is. Many methods are used to make spiral bevel gear. At present, for cutting Epicycloids'Bevel Gear pair, OERLIKON take a method called"generating method" By this way, the small and big gears are all turned out by generating. As the result, the Profile of their gear teeth are all in volute .The object for reversing in this article is manufactured by generating method.To spiral bevel gear, tooth curve and tooth profile in the section along gear tooth curve are two important components. Firstly, never mind which technique is taken to produce spiral bevel gear, the gear tooth face is cut by the cutter head whose axis is perpendicular to the generatrix of root cone. So, the curve of root can represent the tooth curve. Under this condition, we can scan the root curve using CMM to get data. Then, spread out the data with root cone into a plane, and fit a circle on this data. The radius of the circle is the radius of cuter head. And we can get every helix angle of any point anywhere on the tooth curve. Secondly, as we know, tooth profile looks involutedly along the direction perpendicular to plane tangent to back cone. Under this hypothesis, we can set up the measuring plane tangent to back cone. In this direction, we can scan CMM along tooth profile to get data. Sequent, we can gain the basic radius of the involutes (of tooth profile), radius of pitch circle, and other parameter. Thirdly, we compare the results of measurement with the real gear parameter, and analyses the reason for the error.This article studied mainly of the point cloud-like pieces of measurement,data processing, model reconstruction, digital test, error analysis, etc., to draw the relevant conclusions.In the last part of this paper, How to build an Epicycloids'Bevel Gear using Pro/E is studied. And one Epicycloids'Bevel Gear is successfully created in Pro/E.
