As the third largest freshwater lake in China, Taihu Lake is characterized by its large surface area (2338 km2). In recent years, the water pollution of cyanobacteria blooms has become a severe problem in this area. Cyanobacteria blooms have frequently taken place in Taihu Lake since the 21st century owing to the progressive deterioration of eutrophication. This leads to great threat to drinking water safety in the basin.In the first place, the eutrophic trend and causing factors were analyzed in this paper. Then the countermeasures for controlling cyanobacteria blooming were proposed. In addition, the controlling technologies of a group of cyanobacterial metabolites-microcystins were generalized. Basing on these studies, the following research works were finally carried out:i Researched on the degradation characteristics of organic pollutants in water source of Huzhou cityOn the one hand, sampling sites in South Taihu Lake and in main pollution water sources of Huzhou were chosen to be the research objects. Then algae density, composition and concentration of organic pullutants were analyzed during cyanobacteria booming. On the other hand, through the analysis results of the organic pollution characteristics in water source at different cyanobacteria booming stage, the organic pollutants degradation characteristics were assessed.ii Researched on the optimization of drinking water treatment processesIn order to check out the weakness of traditional water treatment processes exsits in main water plants in Huzhou, the removal rate of algae, microcystins, total organic carbon (TOC), etc. and water quality fluctuation were both analyzed after being treated by each process during cyanobacteria booming. To improve treatment ability of the processes, a scheme of the optimization of drinking water treatment processes was formed.iii Researched on emergency technologies for removing cyanobacteria and its metabolitesThrough researching on the removal efficiencies of cyanobacteria and its metabolites using emergency technologies including oxidation technology, powder activated carbon adsorption technology and ultraviolet technology, combining with the actual conditions of water plant, an emergency system was founded to ensure water supply security facing to more and more challenges of water pollution.
