As natural forest resources are lost and wood production are necessary for the life of people today, it is important to promote high efficiency utilization of wood materials, such as maximizing the use of wood products, pursuing high value-added products, developing circular economy and building a conservation-minded community as well. Based on the above, the new wood-plastic composite materials owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties and recycling use are developed rapidly in recent years, especially for outdoor paths, seats, handrails, sheeting, etc. The cutting methods of wood-plastic materials is the key to directly affect the efficiency of utilization and processing, however the study on cutting parameters of wood-plastic materials has not been reported domestically or internationally until now.The methods of the infra-red thermal imaging and computer numerical control machine were used in this study to analyze cutting temperature with different cutting parameters, which was further compared with wood cutting procedure to provide theoretical basis for the cutting process parameters of wood-plastic materials. And then the major conclusion was summarized as follows:1. During the cutting, the cutting temperature would increase when cutting depth, spindle speed, and cutting width increase. Simply put, cutting depth was the most important factor on the cutting temperature, followed by spindle speed, and cutting width was least affected; As feeding speed going up, cutting temperature would be reduced on a small scale. In processing the cutting operation repeatedly performed with small cutting depth, small cutting width, appropriately low spindle speed and rather high feeding rate could keep cutting temperature lower than wood-plastic softening point, and make good quality cutting surface for wood-plastic materials.2. Under the same cutting conditions, the wood cutting friction coefficient is larger than wood-plastic materials for massoniana wood has an uneven texture and far more fiber content than wood-plastic materials. The cutting temperature of massoniana wood is higher than wood-plastic materials. Regardless of this, the changing trends of their cutting temperatures are similar.3. In the cutting procedure, shear heat moderately affected the cutting temperature. The temperature of cutting tool would increase, which was mainly from the front heat source area of tool flank face and the rear one, that is, friction heat.
