Cold ring rolling is one of the advanced manufacturing technologies in producing high-quality seamless rings.Since cold ring rolling is affected by the statics, kinematics and dynamics of factors, its forming simulation process is very difficult. Although some large foreign general purpose software can do the cold ring rolling simulation, the software operations is very complex, and needs professional technical staff to use. In order to simplify user operations and enhance the usefulness of finite element software, on the support of the National Natural Science Foundation key project "Research on plastic forming mechanism and technical equipments of cold ring rolling" (No.50335060),the author has developed a number of modules for the professional cold ring rolling simulation system.The main task of this paper is to design and implement the pre-process module of the cold ring rolling system according to the cold ring rolling process characteristics, and to provide users with visual and easy-to-operate graphical interface and the data needed in simulation.Firstly,this papers has conducted in-depth study on cold ring rolling principle and finite element theory. According to cold ring rolling process characteristics, the functions and the requirements of the system have been analyzed in detail, and the system design ideas and goals proposed. The class establishment and the relationship between classes of the pre-process system application framework are analyzed, and by means of software engineering method and object-oriented programming method, the framework of the pre-processing module for cold ring rolling finite element simulation system has been established,and the system structure and functions , data structures and materials library , the man-machine interface of the system analyzed and designed.The key technology of the pre-process system has been studied. On the basis of the hexahedral mesh generation method, the ring cross-section grid is achieved through the border node method. Based on the cross-section grid, the ring hexahedral element is generated by swept method, and the elements and the nodes treated. Based on surface mesh technology, the die grid and the automatic adjustment of element vector are implement.Therefore; the required mesh data for the simulation have been provided. Based on these technologies, the cold ring rolling numerical simulation pre-process system has been developed.Finally, the paper presents the examples for the rectangular cold ring rolling simulation by use of the developed system. And the comparison of the system with commercial software ABAQUS is made in the pre-process respects. The results have proved that the developed the pre-processing system can be easily applied to cold ring rolling simulation to create the models. The system can provided an effective tool for optimizing process parameters and die structure, and reduce the product development cost and time.
