The research project in this paper is part of the "Eleventh Five-Year" key project "The Software of Product form Design for Numerically-Controlled Machine Tool" supported by The Ministry of Science and Technology. In this thesis, a general quantifiable aesthetic rule of proportion is extracted from various design domains, such as product design, architectural design, and artistic design. Based on the rules, the thesis provides the definition of proportionality and the classification of 11 kinds of proportionalities with different rate equation and the mathematical model, which sets the quantitative criteria to evaluate the quality of form design. Taking the design case of the vertical three-axis machining center, XHAE788, of Beijing First Machine Tool Plant as the sample, this paper summarizes the best proportionality for the form design of numerically-controlled machine tool by the analysis of proportionality between the wholes and the key-parts, and carries on a method of optimal design according to the computation of proportionality value within the key-parts. The conclusion is that proportionality2 is the most suitable for the form design of numerically-controlled machine tool between the wholes and the key-parts. Meanwhile, the framework of proportion analysis and synthesis system is proposed for the proportionality-aided modules of design and evaluation in "Eleventh Five-Year" system. As a new means, the quantitative principle of proportion esthetics and the proportion analysis of modeling of numerically-controlled machine tool will theoretically and practically play an essential role on computer-aided design. Paper concludes with a discussion of further building of proportion system of assessment and generation, as well as imaginable applications of the method of quantitative proportionality in other design areas.
