Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), as flame retardants, are extensively used in all kinds of electrical appliances and textile. Present works have proved that PBDEs have elicited several different types of toxic effects on organisms due to their persistence and potential for bioaccumulation as the same as other Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), such as thyroid hormone unbalance, neurological disorders and carcinogenic action. The studies have shown that PBDEs content is increasing in humanbeings'body and the environment and PBDEs is found in all kinds of environmental medium in the past 30 years. In China, researches on accumulation and distribution of PBDEs in sediments are limited to the coast and delta with sediment areas, the studies about PBDEs in inland lake's sediment is blank. This article chooses BDE-209 which is considerably used in industry as the investigating subject .We are not sure whether the BDE-209 has toxic effects or not, however, BDE-209 can degrade into octa-BDE and penta-BDE in the environment and creature'body, which is included in the international POPs convention. Therefore, the study on the regular patterns of the distribution and pollution of BDE-209 has great significance to the researches on the ecology effect and reducing pollution.A method was established for determination of BDE-209 by gas chromatography/ negative chemical ionization/mass spectrometry (GC-NCI-MS).We use ultrasonic extraction to extract the BDE-209 from the sediment which collected from one inland lake in a city and clean up through activated silica gel chromatographic column. It was validated by analysis of certified reference material and environmental samples. Sediment samples are analyzed by the method and the results are 40.08-175.87ng/g (dw, dry weight). The method's coefficient of recovery is 64.2-113.2%.The paper use Hakanson single-factor index to evaluate the relation among the concentration of BDE-209, water quality, drain and water ratio in sediment, and contrast the concentration of BDE-209 with other region in the world.
