With the development of the science and the demand of sensitive analytical method, the analysis sensitivity (AS: the quotient of peak high by peak area) improvements in gas chromatography, which is a good and common tool in trace analysis, is increasingly interested.In this work, a new method to improve the analysis sensitivity of gas chromatography by rapid pressurization on column was found. The new method of rapid pressurization on column, which consisted of two parts: the rapid pressurization on the top and the end of column, was adapt to the gas chromatography-flame ionization detector system. An improvement of 6 to 45 times in analysis sensitivity was obtained with limit hardware modification on the GC-FID system. The rapidness and convenience in pursuing the best operating preferences made the method widely available in both common and trace analysis.It was proved in the experiments that a 6 to 10 times improvements in AS was made by rapid pressurization on the top of column, while 8 to 45 times increased by the end-of-column mode. The detectability was also improved with a limit quantity of 10-13 mols by the ordinary direct injection with a small sampling amount. In addition, the method of the rapid pressurization on column retained the necessary resolution of the analyzing process, and effectively meliorated the peak shape as well.In a word, the method of rapid pressurization on column was proved to be a new estimable way of improving the analysis sensitivity of GC-FID system, and was able to be generalized in the future work.
