The separation theory is the physical and mathematical description of the gas-solid separation process in cyclone separators. Until now, many separation theories have been proposed, and lots of separation models based on the separation theories have also been established. But in many separation theories the effect of interactions between particles has not been considered and the prediction of the separation efficiency of high temperature cyclone separators is quite different from the actual value. However, adjacent particles may collide and hence agglomerate after entering a cyclone separator, which has an influence on the particle separation process. In this paper the phenomenon of particle collision and agglomeration in cyclone separators is confirmed by a cyclic test. The effects of dust concentration, inlet velocity and temperature on particle collision and agglomeration and cyclone separation performance are experimentally researched. The results show that particle agglomeration can increase the separation efficiency of fine particle. The particle collision and agglomeration have an influence on the particle separation process, which can not be simply ignored, especially at high dust concentration. The separation mechanism in cyclone separators is mainly controlled by the centrifugal force and the particle collision and agglomeration. The analysis about the movement of particles in cyclone separators shows that the particle collision and agglomeration mainly exist in the annular space of cyclone. Particle agglomeration due to inertial collision and particle interception is dominant in the cyclone. A model describing the influence of particle agglomeration on the separation process is proposed.Through an experimental research and theoretically analysis on particle collision and agglomeration in cyclone separators, a new gas-solid separation model which takes into account the influence of particle collision and agglomeration is established on the basis of Dietz's three-region model. According to this new model, the separation mechanism in cyclone separators is mainly controlled by the centrifugal force (for coarse particles) and by the particle collision and agglomeration (for fine particles).
