The activated sludge coming from membrane bioreactor( MBR) was acclimated with different kinds of substrates respectively to fit sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and to form microbiologic population with a long food chain. One is simulated municipal sewage using the mixture of glucose and peptone, the other simulated industrial wastewater containing phenol. It takes a few days to acclimate the sludge using the former, while the sludge acclimation with the later needs about one month. Finally, both ways of acclimation make the sludge′s properties improved.The OUR(oxygen uptake rate)of the acclimated activated sludge were measured, which include the OUR of the sludge in the period of endogenous respiration and the OUR of the sludge in degrading four kinds of substrates. The measured results indicate that the OUR of the sludge in the period of endogenous respiration is related to the activated sludge concentration rather than the kind of substrates used in the sludge acclimation. The comparson between the sludge′s OUR in degrading four kinds of substrates with that in the period of endogenous respiration represents four kinds of substrates can be degraded by the microbe in the activated sludge and the biochemical feasibility of these substrates is different. From the measured OUR of the sludge in the different steps of the acclimation for phenol degradation, the activity of the sludge degrading phenol was found to increase with the rise in the acclimation time.In the highly concentration SBR system, the effect of the organic sludge loading on the productive rate and the age of the activated sludge was investigated using the simulated municipal sewage. The organic sludge loading in the state of the balance of activated sludge′s growth and decline was determined. Meanwhile, the synthetic ratio and the endogenous respiration coefficient of the activated sludge were obtained. The highly concentration SBR system in the range of the organic sludge loading 0.1~0.2 can perform regularly, retaining the low COD of effluent and stable microbiologic population.
