With the development of steel-making technology, it becomes more and more important to improve the cleanliness and quality of continuous casting steel. In recent year, the metallurgist have taken a serious action on strengthening and enlarging the tundish metallurgical function. serious action on strengthening and enlarging the tundish metallurgical function. Tundish is an important reactor in the steel-making process. Its function is not only depositing and distributing liquid steel, but also purifying liquid steel and removing . non-metallic inclusions in it. One of the important measures was that the appropriate flow control devices were installed to form the reasonable flow pattern, which not only made the inclusions well floated but also created the advantageous condition to uniform the liquid steel temperature and composition. In order to releasing the metallurgical function, especially for small tundish, the interior structure of the tundish needs to be optimized by means of dam and flow controlling device installing.In this paper, according to the fact of the slab CC tundish at Linfen Iron and Steel Company, the mathematical and physical simulation method were used to make certain the best flow control device. The experiment model, which was 0.5 of the prototype and was made of Plexiglas, was built and the experiments were done based on the Froude similarity by similarity principle. The mathematical model, describing the flow phenomena in the tundish, was established according as the continuity equation and momentum equation, meanwhile the Fluent commercial software was used to calculate.The research proves that the test results are basically consistent with physical and mathematical simulation through the flow of liquid steel, trajectory and flow lines of the inclusion in the tundish. The flowing condition of molten steel has been much improved compared with that of molten steel in former tundish, which is not optimized. Through an optimized study by using equipments, molten steel can float properly, the fluid surface keeps steady and the temperature of molten steel becomes more uniform. When the minimum time of residence of molten steel lengthens, the proportion of piston flow enlarges and the floating upward of the inclusion increases, it becomes more facilitated to clean the molten steel, thereby realize the purpose of elevate the quality of casting products in the end.
