Butyl rubber, a random copolymer of isobutene (about 97.5% mole) with isoprene (about 2.5% mole) is prepared by a lower temperature cationic polymerization process. Due to its unique microstructure, butyl rubber have some good property such as airtightness, vent ratio, aging resistance and so on. It is mainly used to make some products like inner tube, gelatine capsule etc. Therefore,in 1999, Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Corporation established butyl rubber process equipment using the technique of Italy PI Corparation, and its practical output has exceeded its design output now. In order to the progress in butyl rubber manufacture and improving the properties of butyl rubber, this thesis studied the properties of the butyl rubber made in Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Corporation.At first, this article compared the properties of different butyl rubbers made in China and abroad, including the basic characters, raw rubber, rubber compoune, vulcanisate, aging resistance, inner tube application etc.The results showed that except maximum torque(MH),processing property and vulcanisate, the other properties of Yansan butyl rubber product were as good as the foreign product. Yansan butyl rubber product could be used as material to make inner tube in place of the imported butyl rubber product completely.Secondly, some key factors resulting in the bigger maximum torque(MH) of Yansan butyl rubber product were discussed by analysed the microstructure of butyl rubber. The results showed that the bigger maximum torque(MH) mainly result from the lower content invalid chain ends in Yansan butyl rubber product.The property of maximum torque was improved by increasing the content of the smaller molecular weight copolymer, and as a result the processing property was improved effectively.Finally, this article discussed the property of gelatine capsule of Yansan butyl rubber product. The results showed that the fatigue life of the product could be prolonged by adjusting the content of the different composition and by adding few EPDM.
