In this paper, 4-Oxo-4-Etheroxy-2-Butenoic Acids, their copolymers with styrene and rare earth complexes were synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR spectra, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermal analysis (TG-DTA), mass spectroscopy (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), fluorescence determination and chemical analysis. It consists of four parts as follows:1. A brief review for the development and application of macromolecule metal complexes has been given.2. Derivatives of (Z)-4(4-M-Phenoxy)-4-Oxo-2-Butenoic Acid (M=H, Br, CH3, OCH3) (Ln) were synthesized by two different methods. In addition, a series of Poly-(Styrene and (Z)-4-ethyloxy-4-Oxo-2-Butenoic Acid) (PSt-EOBA) were synthesized. 3. Rare Earth Complexes with derivatives of (Z)-4(4-M-Phenoxy)-4-Oxo-2-butenoic Acid and Poly-(Styrene and (Z)-4-ethyloxy-4-Oxo-2-butenoic Acid) were synthesized. The results indicated that Rare Earth Complexes with derivatives of (Z)-4(4-M-Phenoxy)-4-Oxo-2-butenoic Acid can slightly dissolve in DMSO and DMF. The fluorescence intensity depended on the substituted groups in the benzene. The copolymer and their rare earth complexes were three dimensional net structure and difficult to dissolve in organic solvents. They posses high thermal stability and can emit strong fluorescence.4. A series of poly-(Styrene and (E)-4(4-Bro-Phenoxy)-4-Oxo-2-Butenoic Acid) (PSt-BOBA) and their rare earth complexes (RE-PSt-BOBA) were synthesized (figure 1). The complexes have similar property with rare earth complexes with poly-(Styrene and (Z)-4-ethyloxy -4-Oxo-2-Butenoic Acid). With the increasing of metal contents in the complexes, the fluorescence increased.
