In the paper, the oxidized bamboo pulp fiber was firstly prepared by selectively oxidized with sodium periodate solution, and new active group, i.e. aldehyde group, formed. Then, the oxidized bamboo pulp fiber was treated with functional material and they crosslinked with each other to get the new functional bamboo pulp fiber. We selected two kinds of functional materials: chitosan and collagen protein. Chitosan is a natural alkalescence amylose and, the chemical constitution of chitosan is similar to that of cellulose. Chitosan has many unique biological activity and functions, including hemostasis activeness, anti-microbe activeness, biodegradability and antibacterial activity. Collagen protein is a natural protein. Its superhelix structure endues it with many characteristics, such as high stretch intensity, biodegradability and low antigen activity. The amino acids composition is similiar with that of human skin, so it has good body affinity. The results show that after oxidization the crystallinity of bamboo pulp fiber decreased. At optimized process condition, the bamboo pulp fiber can keep its original mechanical properties and make the fiber acquire a certain content of aldehyde group. After chitosan and collagen protein solution processing, the weight of oxidized bamboo pulp fiber increased. FTIR results showed that Schiff base formed, which illustrated that amido group of functional materials have crosslinked with aldehyde group of oxidized fiber. Thus, new functional bamboo pulp fiber was prepared successfully. The new functional bamboo pulp fabrics have good bacterial repellency, wrinkle resistance and anti-ultraviolet properties. Moreover, whiteness and mechanical properties of the functional bamboo pulp changed little.
